How Hypnofast Works
The active ingredient midazolam enhances the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the central nervous system by binding to GABA-A receptors. This increases chloride ion flow, hyperpolarises neurons, and suppresses excessive brain activity. The result is sedation, muscle relaxation, reduced anxiety, and short-term memory loss.
Dosage
Dosage depends on the indication, patient age, and overall health status:
- Insomnia: Adults typically take 7.5–15 mg orally; elderly patients usually start at 7.5 mg.
- Pre-procedure sedation: 15 mg taken approximately 30–60 minutes before the procedure.
- Parenteral (IV/IM) use: Dosing varies according to procedure type, patient age, and body weight and must always be administered by healthcare professionals.
Always follow the prescribing clinician’s instructions exactly. Self-adjustment of dose is unsafe.
Side Effects
Common side effects include daytime drowsiness, confusion, fatigue, headache, muscle weakness, and excessive sleepiness. Parenteral use may cause respiratory depression or apnoea. If side effects persist or worsen, seek medical advice promptly.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Use during pregnancy is generally not recommended unless no safer alternative is available, as midazolam crosses the placenta. The medicine passes into breast milk; therefore, breastfeeding should be avoided or the infant closely monitored for sedation. Always consult a healthcare professional before use.
Storage
- Store in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture.
- Typically keep below 30°C.
- Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
- Dispose of unused medicine according to pharmacist or clinician guidance.
UK Regulation
As a midazolam-based product, Hypnofast is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) in the United Kingdom and is regulated under UK benzodiazepine control frameworks. Prescribing and dispensing require a valid prescription, and its use is closely monitored due to the risk of dependence and misuse.
