How Diazepam Works
Diazepam works by enhancing the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a calming neurotransmitter in the brain. This action reduces excessive nerve activity, helping to relieve anxiety, muscle tension, and seizures. The result is a sedative, muscle-relaxant, and anti-convulsant effect on the central nervous system.
Dosage
Dosage depends on the condition being treated, as well as the patient’s age and medical history. Typical adult doses range from 2mg to 10mg, taken 1–4 times daily, strictly as prescribed by a doctor. Do not increase the dose or duration without medical advice, as misuse can cause serious harm.
Special Considerations
- Diazepam may cause drowsiness, slowed reactions, and impaired judgment.
- Avoid alcohol and other sedatives while taking this medication, as combined effects can be dangerous.
- Extra caution is required for elderly patients and those with liver, kidney, or respiratory conditions.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Diazepam is not recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the first and third trimesters, as it may cause fetal harm, withdrawal symptoms, or breathing problems in newborns. The medicine passes into breast milk and may sedate infants. Breastfeeding should be avoided unless specifically advised by a doctor.
Side Effects
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, and muscle weakness. Less common but serious effects may include confusion, memory problems, mood changes, and breathing difficulty. Long-term use can lead to dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms if stopped abruptly.
Overdose Warning
An overdose may cause extreme drowsiness, confusion, loss of consciousness, or coma. Combining diazepam with alcohol, opioids, or other sedatives greatly increases the risk of overdose. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected—this is a medical emergency.
Storage
- Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.
- Protect from direct sunlight.
- Keep out of sight and reach of children and pets.
- Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
