How Rivotril Works
Clonazepam enhances the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. This reduces excessive nerve activity, producing calming and anticonvulsant effects. As a result, Rivotril helps prevent panic attacks and control seizure episodes.
Dosage
Dosage varies depending on the condition being treated, patient age, and clinical response, and must be individualised. Treatment usually begins with a low dose, which is gradually increased to minimise side effects. Rivotril 2 mg should only be taken exactly as prescribed by a physician and must not be adjusted without medical advice.
Side Effects
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, and impaired coordination. Long-term use may lead to tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal symptoms if treatment is stopped abruptly. Serious adverse effects may include respiratory depression, confusion, and mood changes.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Clonazepam may increase the risk of fetal harm when used during pregnancy. It passes into breast milk and may cause sedation or feeding difficulties in infants. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only if clearly advised by a doctor and when the benefits outweigh the potential risks.

UK Regulation
In the United Kingdom, clonazepam is classified as a Schedule 4 Controlled Drug under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations. It is also a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) and cannot be supplied without a valid prescription. Strict controls apply due to the risks of misuse, dependence, and diversion.
